As part of my development as a illustrator I attended Creative Futures week at my university. I have been to past creative futures over my years here and felt that a write up was needed. Briefly some of the lectures I attended were with people such as Jason Minsky who ran a portfolio lecture regarding the development of your portfolio and what is needed to create a decent portfolio, secondly I attended a lecture with Martin Steenton who is a publisher at Blankslate and who also runs a site call avoidthefuture.com.Thirdly I attended a lecture with illustrator and character designer Jonathan Edwards who ran a lecture on character design.

Some of the notes I taken in these lectures to go into more detail individually.

Jason Minsky : Putting a portfolio together.

  • Its not a hobby its a job you have to put effort into.

What you need:

  • Folio box
  • Protective covers
  • Guts
  • Make an order to them
  • Invest in yourself

Jonathan Edwards : Character Design

Jonathan is a illustrator with 20 years experience . In the lecture he mainly spoke about character design. His creation Inspector Cumulus which was created through two doodles randomly has been a success in character design. In the lecture he stressed the importance of researching who you are sending your work too so that it is good buisness.

His tips :

  • Competitions bring so many entries and viewers.
  • Social networking gets your work seen.
  • Character design and be good in bits.

Martin Steenton : Publisher at Blankslate.

After studying media studies at university he was stuck with what to do next. His next step was to create a blog called avoidthefuture which covered French comics. Next he started to work as a editor at blank slate and made his way from there. Began working for free to gain exposure.

Tips to getting your work published:

  • Tailor your work to the people you want to publish them.
  • Promote your work to social networking sites, conventions.
  • A fully formed pitch will help, do not just send your work off.
  • You need to learn how to sell yourself.

Its been a while since my last post as I have been busy travelling round and taking a break from the ordinary. Recently taken a trip upto Liverpool to attend Screenadelica which I have to say was a massive disapointment and stupidly un- organised I could rant on for a while but I would be going for a good hour on why it was a disapointment, anyways me and my girlfriend also taken time out to look at some of the other sights and hunt for street art and we found bits and bobs sso heres one of the bits and bobs. Enjoy. P.s Im getting back on the drawing game today so I shall upload as soon as possible peace to all :) .

To take stress off doing brief work for my university degree I decided to chop out some stencils and use 10% acrylic and 90% textile medium to roll out some circles. I have not had so much fun in a while it has been a good night. So yeah enjoy.

Evening just a quick upload of the vinyl sleeve I finished today for the band I made up ‘Bermuda Triangle’ I will upload the front and back now so enjoy.

And this is the linework for the print. Enjoy.

Evening, this is the print in question it was for a editorial brief we recieved in University about how being kind is a good thing to have as a person and its a good characteristic, so I looked into kindness quotes in my research and found a brilliant quote by Mark Twain, it just struck a chord and showed me that we can all be kind day in day out and not make it seem like something difficult. Anyways enjoy.
